Obituary

Carl Stanley Ashworth, age 82, of Ellijay, Georgia passed away on April 23, 2025. He was born on May 30, 1942 in Rome, Georgia to the late Carl Cleveland Ashworth and Hilda Langford Ashworth.

He was a graduate of Avondale High School in Avondale Estates, Georgia and furthered his education at Florida Southern College and the University of Georgia.

Stan spent 44 years as an executive in the apparel industry and retired as a senior vice president of Tropical Sportswear International in Tampa, Florida. Stan and his wife, Rena, moved to Gilmer County in 2005, after which he worked several years for PDQ Manufacturing in Ellijay.

He was a dedicated member of Hope Lutheran Church. He volunteered with Kids Ferst of Gilmer County and served as treasurer for several years. Additionally, he volunteered at the Bookshelf at the Gilmer County Library. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, reading, attending UGA football games, and cheering for the Atlanta Braves.

Stan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rena. He is also survived by two daughters, Angela Renner (Ron) and Fran Whelan (Chris), and four grandchildren, Kyle Renner, Rachel Renner, Jenna Whelan, and Thomas Whelan, as well as numerous extended family members and friends.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Carolyn Ashworth, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mel and Angela Fleischer.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 3, at Hope Lutheran Church in Ellijay, Georgia. The service will be held at 2:00 PM, with visitation preceding at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow at a later date at Elmhurst Cemetery in Elberton, Georgia.
