Obituary

We are saddened to share the passing of Charles Winston "Buster" Roberts of East Ellijay, Georgia, who died peacefully at home on April 25, 2025, at the age of 67. Born on November 15, 1957, Charles was the beloved son of the late Louis and Mary Ruth (Stamey) Roberts of Ellijay, GA.

He was a proud graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology (with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering) and of Clemson University (with a Master's degree in Computer Science). After obtaining these higher degrees, Charles enjoyed an incredible career as an engineer. Throughout a distinguished 30 years in engineering and software development, Charles made significant contributions to Schlumberger, Motorola, and EchoStar, developing a groundbreaking patent that continues to reshape the industry. He earned prominence and respect as both a Subject Matter Expert and a highly regarded mentor.

Being a devoted son, Charles chose to pause his career to become the sole caregiver for his beloved mother, Mary Ruth. He patiently, selflessly, tirelessly and lovingly attended to all her needs throughout her extended illness. With unwavering devotion, strength, grace, and compassion, Charles remained by her side until her peaceful passing, honoring her with a depth of care that reflected the boundless love they shared.

Although Charles was a verified member of Mensa International, the world's oldest and largest high-IQ society, he was well recognized as simply being "a kind soul." Charles never sought recognition. It is his love, respect and high regard for others, as well as his understated brilliance and generous spirit that leaves an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Charles is survived by his brother, John, and treasured indescribably by a host of loving cousins, extended family, former coworkers, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

In keeping with Charles' wishes, no formal service will be held. A casual Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Bernhardt Funeral Home, 163 River Street, Ellijay, GA. All who knew Charles are invited to come and share memories.

Immediately following, we will gather to enjoy Charles' favorite cuisine at Mucho Kaliente Mexican Restaurant at 941 Maddox Dr, Ste 232, East Ellijay, GA. We would be delighted for you to join us! Guests are kindly asked to cover their own expenses.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Charles by joining us to share a memory or two, or by contributing a kind gesture in his name to his favorite charity: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
