Kathryn Ann (Leach) Coakley
1942 – 2025

Kathryn Ann "Katie" (Leach) Coakley passed away peacefully on Monday, October 27, 2025, just four days after celebrating her 83rd birthday. Katie was a beloved wife, mother, Nana, sister, and friend whose energy, humor, and creative spirit touched everyone she met.

Born in 1942 in Edwardsburg, Michigan to Russell and Alberta Leach, Katie grew up on her family's pig farm, where she developed a strong work ethic, a love of the outdoors, and a knack for fixing or refinishing just about anything. She preferred being outside with her father and dog over indoor chores—though no one could ever match her standards for a clean home.

Katie attended Western Michigan University, earning degrees in Art and Education. She began her teaching career at Southgate Schafer High School, where her warmth and wit made her instantly popular among students and staff alike. It was there that she met the love of her life, Patrick Coakley, who won her heart with a sly Irish grin—and an onion in a martini. They married on June 25, 1962, and together built a joyful life filled with love, laughter, and adventure.

A devoted mother to Kalee Ann, Sean Patrick Finnbar, and Jennie Lil, Katie took great pride in her family's accomplishments and never missed an opportunity to brag about their successes. Her support, creativity, and humor shaped their lives and continue to inspire her grandchildren—Alyse Lillian, Conor Patrick, and Ryn Lillie.

Katie's career as a teacher reflected her belief that art and creativity are essential to education. From her early days as the "picture lady" bringing art history into classrooms, to her years teaching subjects ranging from math and physical education to her true passion, art, Katie poured her heart into helping students see the beauty in the world around them. Paper mâché, painting, and mosaics were just the beginning - she infused every lesson with imagination and joy.

In retirement, Katie and Pat embraced life to the fullest. An early adopter of Pickleball and a straight shot on the golf course (including two holes in one to her name!), Katie also traveled the world with Pat, visiting China, Russia, Vietnam, Thailand, numerous countries across Europe, Egypt, and Alaska. Whether exploring faraway places or creating something beautiful at home, she brought color and light wherever she went.

Katie's zest for life was evident in everything she did—in every Jitterbug dance step with Pat, every flower and plant she nurtured, every piece of furniture she brought back to life, and every laugh she shared with friends and family.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Alberta; her brother, Harold; and her sister, Ginny. She is survived by her husband, Patrick; her brother, David; her children, Kalee (Mark), Sean (Michelle), and Jennie; and her grandchildren, Alyse, Conor, and Ryn. Her family will forever cherish the love, laughter, and creative spark she brought into their lives.

A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Bernhardt Funeral Home in Ellijay, Georgia.
