Madison Horace
"Mh" Painter
Jul 23, 1939 — Apr 20, 2024
Ellijay
Madison Horace "MH" Painter, age 84, of Ellijay, passed away on April 20, 2024, at Northside Cherokee Hospital in Canton.
Born on July 23, 1939, in Gilmer County, to the late Horace and Irene McClurd Painter. Mr. Painter attended Henry Grady School and Gilmer High School, class of 1957. He proudly served in the Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and received an honorable discharge in 1965. Following his military service, he worked for Ford Motor Company and Lockheed Martin, and was an instructor at Chattahoochee Vo-Tech School. Due to an early retirement, Madison followed his passion for forgotten timepieces. The enjoyment and success propelled him further into the world of horology. He was known as the "TickTockMan" of Ellijay. It was not just a hobby for him; it was a testament to his persistence, patience, and love for intricate craftsmanship. He was not only repairing clocks—he was marking his own time in a meaningful way, creating moments and memories that, much like the clocks he cared for, will stand the test of time.
Mr. Painter was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Painter; brother, Lamar Painter; sister, Geraldine Roberts; daughter-in-law, Andrea McArthur; and granddaughter, Rae McArthur.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Geneva (Sue Weaver) Painter; sons, Dana McArthur of Woodstock, Benjamin H. Painter and wife, Kiyoko Painter, of Pacifica, CA, and Jeffrey M. Painter of Ellijay; brothers, J.W. Painter of Chatsworth and Jerry Painter of Ellijay; sister, Ozella Garner of Chatsworth; and grandchildren, Daniel Blake Kirk, Gaige Gagnon, Davis McArthur, and Jackson Painter.
Mr. Painter attended the First Baptist Church of Ellijay. In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Painter will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date, with interment to follow at Gates Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
Bernhardt Funeral Home is in charge of these arrangements.
