Mrs. Mary Alene Johnson Crawford passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2024. She was born in Gilmer County to the late William A. Johnson and the late Opal Penland Johnson of Ellijay. Her brothers, Gus, Ralph and Joe Johnson preceded her in death.
She was married to Thomas Eugene "Gene" Crawford for 63 years until he passed away in 2013. She was a loving mother and grandmother and is survived by daughter, Camille Day, son-in-law, Michael Day, son, Thomas E. Crawford, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Donna Crawford, son James Holt Crawford, grandchildren, Carol Baker, Mike Day, Jr, Cayli Crawford, Lindsay Crawford, Carly Crawford and great grandchildren, Austen Day and Ally, Jack and Maggie Robertson.
A member of First Baptist Church for most of her life, she sang in the choir for many years and was a devoted Christian, serving her church and community in many organizations. She graduated from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Ga., taught school in Ellijay, Coffee Co. and Rome, Ga. She and her husband Gene worked tirelessly for Habitat for Humanity for many years helping to build houses around the country. She worked as a Pink Lady, the Lioness Club, Garden Club, was on the Hospital Board, the county Board of Equalization and helped start the Learning Center in Ellijay. In 1995, she and her husband were honored by the State of Georgia for their volunteerism and dedication to their community through exceptional public service.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Crawford will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Dr. David Drake and Rev. James Holt officiating. Rev. Scott Eaton will perform the music. A private interment will follow for the family immediately after the ceremony. Pall bearers are her nephews: Jay, Bill and Jeff Johnson, Chris Durden, Michael Day, Jr. and Chris Baker.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m at the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted; however, the family respectfully asks that no food be brought to the funeral home in memory of Mrs. Mary Alene Crawford.
