Mrs. Mary Howard Mathis, age 93 of Ellijay, passed away on Tuesday, June 18th, 2024 at Manor Lake Assisted Living of Ellijay.

Mrs. Mathis was born on January 27th, 1931, in Aiken, SC, to the late Amplus D. Howard and Mattie King Howard. She was a teacher and a homemaker. Mary was also a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She embraced her Christian faith and read her bible daily. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her father, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Nelson Mathis, Sr., her sister Matilee Johnson and brother A.D. Howard, Jr. Survivors include her three sons, Tom (Casey) Mathis, Jr. of Naples, FL, Howard B. Mathis of Ellijay, and Russell W. (Cathy) Mathis of Ball Ground; two sisters, Jane Faucett of Huntsville, AL and Virginia Sappington of Marietta; three grandchildren, Katherine (Aaron) Vantosh, Bryan (Isamar) Mathis, and Megan (Rodney) Bell; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas Mathis and Millie Mathis.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21st at 3:00 PM at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Rosser officiating. A private interment for the family will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Friday, June 21st from 2:00 PM until the service hour.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Georgia Mountains Hospice @ 70 Caring Way, Jasper, GA 30143 in memory of Mrs. Mary Mathis.
