Mattielene Abercrombie Hood was born on December 8th, 1938. She went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 18, 2026.

She will be laid to rest at Pleasant Gap Baptist Church beside her husband, William Robert (Bob) Hood, who preceded her in death in 1999, and her infant daughter, Sherry Louise Hood, who preceded her in death in 1966.

Born to Richard and Lorena Smith Abercrombie, she was one of 10 Abercrombie children. Proceeding her in death were her brothers: Otis, Roy, Clyde, Hoyt, Herman, Leonard, James, and her sister, Rosalee (Burgess). She has one remaining sister, Elsie (Johnny) Kowitz.

Like many children raised in large families in the Appalachian mountains, her life had many hardships.

Losing her father at age 10 left a huge impact on Mattie's life. Her mother, Lorena, persevered through great trials, raising the remaining 6 children without her husband. However, these hardships forged a close family.

At 19 years old, Mattie and Bob married, and she spent 21 years as a military spouse. Their military years required they move often and they enjoyed their time in Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Germany. Later in life, she studied to be an LPN and had a fulfilling career at numerous hospitals and nursing homes in North Georgia.

Mattie enjoyed spending time with her brothers and sisters, along with her many nieces and nephews.

She was passionate about flowers and was known for her generous spirit. You literally never left her house unless she gave you something!

Mattie had two sons; Doug (Marilea) Hood, and Russell (Leta) Hood, one daughter; Janice (Randy) Durden. She was 'Nana' to 7 grandchildren: Olivia and John Hood; Rachel, Rebecca, and Sam Hood; Colby and Charis Durden. She had 11 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to recognize the incredible team of caregivers and staff at The Oaks Assisted living. They were a great blessing to Mattie as she resided there the last year of her life. Her 'Oaks' family made sure she felt loved and cared for every day! Compassis Hospice group was a lifeline of comfort and compassion to Mattie.

A private graveside ceremony was held at Pleasant Gap Baptist Church Cemetery.
