Mrs. Retha James Stanford, age 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in Smyrna, Georgia. She was born on March 13, 1936, to the late Thurlo James and Artie Anderson James.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Stanford was known for her kindness, dedication, and strong work ethic. She enjoyed a long career as a banker with Wells Fargo, where she was admired for her professionalism and care for her customers and colleagues alike. Retha participated and was instrumental in the American Women's Business Association (ABWA). She was also active in reading to inner city children and volunteered for many years as a mentor to city youths. However, her love of gardening was one of her greatest joys,

In addition to her parents, Retha is preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Travis Giddens; infant son, James T Giddens Jr; brother George Franklin James; sister Mary Ellen Ridley, and her second husband, Ernest Stanford.

She is survived by her devoted children, Theresa Lynn Giddens, Anthony Broadus Giddens, Bogie Stanford; eight cherished grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and four loving nieces and nephews; sister in law, Ellene, and brother-in-law, Ray also survive. Retha will be remembered for her warm heart and the love she shared with all who knew her.

The family will be receiving friends at the Bernhardt Funeral Home on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30. p.m. A Graveside Service to honor the life of Mrs. Stanford will follow at 2:00 p.m. from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Ellijay.
